My patient, a young girl, told me the following dream: “You seem to know that my sister now has only one son, Karl; the elder Otto died while I was still living in her house. Otto was my favorite, I raised him myself. I also loved the younger one very much, but in any case not nearly as much as the deceased. Tonight I suddenly dreamed that Karl died.

He lies in a small coffin, arms folded on his chest; candles burn around him just like they did around Otto, whose death shocked me so much.

Tell me, what does this mean? You know me, am I already so bad that I could wish the death of my sister’s only child? Or does my dream mean that I would like Karl to die better than Otto, whom I loved much more?”

I assured her that this latter interpretation was excluded. After thinking a little, I gave the correct interpretation of the dream, which she then confirmed. It was not difficult for me either, because I knew the life story of my patient.

Orphaned at an early age, the girl was brought up in the house of her older sister and there she met a man who made an indelible impression on her heart. At one time they thought that this barely emerging relationship would end in marriage, but this happy outcome was prevented by the sister. The motives for her action remain unclear. After the breakup, the gentleman with whom my patient fell in love stopped visiting her sister’s house. It was just before the dream, and the concert was supposed to take place exactly on the day when she came to me.
